In my experience, guys dont waste their time on things they dont want or deem unworthy. and he said its not a matter of if he wants to date you, its when. bingo, he likes you. just be friends for now, and he'll take the next step when hes ready. that said, dont go blinding yourself to other guys, there may be someone else for you out there than you highschool sweetheart.
