DS: Is this a dumb idea....?
I think in the long run, it is better to stick with just the one dog. It is very stressful trying to balance pets and college, and even though your dog may have fewer people (and cats!) to play with, it will be a better decision in the long run. Since he is friendly toward other dogs, stake out some dog parks in your area. Take him on walks that are different routines all the time. You may even find a friend in college with a dog of their own. Then you can set up playdates or have the dogs hang out together while you study. I think there will be enough change of scenery at the new place that he will stay pretty mentally active and may not miss the variety of people as much. After your first year of college you should get a feel for how busy it keeps you, and that will help you to decide on how much extra pet responsibility you want to take on. Hope this helps!
